What Is Sudoku?

Sudoku is a logic-based number puzzle played on a 9×9 grid, divided into nine 3×3 boxes. The goal is simple: fill every cell with a digit from 1 to 9 so that each row, each column, and each 3×3 box contains every digit exactly once.

No math is required — just pure logical deduction. Sudoku was popularized in Japan in the 1980s (the name means “single number”) and became a worldwide phenomenon after appearing in The Times in 2004. Today it’s one of the most popular brain-training activities in the world.

The Basic Rules

Every Sudoku puzzle follows three ironclad rules:

Row Rule

Each of the 9 horizontal rows must contain the digits 1–9 with no repeats.

C

Column Rule

Each of the 9 vertical columns must contain the digits 1–9 with no repeats.

B

Box Rule

Each of the 9 bold-outlined 3×3 boxes must contain the digits 1–9 with no repeats.

A well-formed Sudoku puzzle has exactly one solution. You never need to guess — every cell can be deduced through logic alone.

Before learning any technique, practice pencil marking — writing small candidate numbers in each empty cell. This makes patterns visible and is the foundation of every advanced strategy.

Beginner Techniques

These two techniques will solve most Easy and many Medium puzzles entirely on their own. Master them before moving on.

Naked Singles

A naked single occurs when a cell has only one possible candidate. Check the cell’s row, column, and box — if 8 of the 9 digits are already placed elsewhere, the remaining digit must go in that cell.

How to spot it: Scan cells near the intersections of busy rows, columns, and boxes. The more digits already placed around a cell, the more likely it’s a naked single.

Hidden Singles

A hidden single is when a particular digit can only go in one cell within a row, column, or box — even though that cell may have multiple candidates.

How to spot it: Pick a digit (say, 5) and scan each box asking: “Where in this box can 5 go?” If only one cell is valid, place it there. Then repeat for rows and columns.

Alternate between naked and hidden singles in a loop. Place one number, then re-scan the affected row, column, and box — each placement often creates new singles elsewhere.

Intermediate Techniques

When singles aren’t enough, these candidate-elimination techniques break through Medium and Hard puzzles.

Naked Pairs

When two cells in the same row, column, or box contain exactly the same two candidates (and no others), those two numbers are locked to those two cells. You can safely eliminate both candidates from every other cell in that group.

Why it works: One of the pair must be 3 and the other must be 7. Since both numbers are “claimed,” no other cell in that row can use them.

Pointing Pairs (Box/Line Reduction)

When all candidates for a digit within a 3×3 box fall on a single row (or column), that digit can be eliminated from the rest of that row (or column) outside the box.

How to spot it: For each digit in each box, note which row(s) or column(s) its candidates fall on. If they all share one line, you’ve found a pointing pair.

Advanced Techniques

These powerful techniques crack the hardest Sudoku puzzles. They’re rare but devastating when they appear.

X-Wing

An X-Wing pattern forms when a particular digit appears as a candidate in exactly two cells in each of two different rows, and those cells share the same two columns. The digit must occupy two of these four cells diagonally, so you can eliminate it from all other cells in those two columns.

Visual pattern: Imagine a rectangle. The digit appears at all four corners and nowhere else in those two rows.

Swordfish

The Swordfish extends the X-Wing concept to three rows and three columns. If a candidate appears in exactly 2-3 cells per row across three rows, and those cells collectively span exactly three columns, the candidate can be eliminated from all other cells in those three columns.

Swordfish is extremely hard to spot without pencil marks. It’s one of the reasons experienced solvers always maintain detailed candidate lists.

🧠 When to Use Advanced Techniques

Only reach for X-Wing and Swordfish when you’ve completely exhausted singles, pairs, and pointing pairs. Most rated “Hard” puzzles can be solved without them. They’re essential for “Expert” and “Extreme” difficulty levels.
