10 Sudoku Tips for Intermediate Players: Level Up Your Solving Skills
You've mastered the basics — scanning rows, columns, and boxes for missing numbers. But now you're stuck on harder puzzles. These 10 intermediate techniques will break through those walls and make you a significantly stronger solver.

If you can solve easy Sudoku puzzles but find yourself stuck on medium and hard ones, you're in the right place. The jump from beginner to intermediate is the biggest leap in Sudoku, and it comes down to learning elimination techniques — ways to figure out which numbers can't go in a cell, even when you can't yet see which number must go there.
Each technique below builds on the last. Master them in order, and you'll find that puzzles you once thought impossible become solvable — even enjoyable.
1.Naked Pairs (and Triples)
A Naked Pair occurs when two cells in the same row, column, or box can only contain the same two candidates. Since those two numbers must go in those two cells, you can eliminate them as candidates from every other cell in that unit.
💡 Example
Imagine cells A1 and A5 in Row A both have only candidates {3, 7}. No other cells in Row A can contain 3 or 7 — cross them out. This often reveals the answer for other cells immediately.
Naked Triples work the same way but with three cells and three candidates. The cells don't each need all three candidates — they just collectively contain only those three numbers. This is trickier to spot but incredibly powerful.
2.Hidden Pairs
A Hidden Pair is the opposite of a Naked Pair. Here, two candidates appear in only two cells within a unit — but those cells may have other candidates too. Since those two numbers must go in those two cells, you can remove all other candidates from those cells.
💡 How to spot it
Look at a row and ask: "Where can the number 2 go? Where can the number 8 go?" If both can only go in the same two cells, that's a Hidden Pair — regardless of what other candidates those cells have.
3.Pointing Pairs
A Pointing Pair (or Pointing Triple) occurs when a candidate within a box is restricted to a single row or column. Since that number must go in that row/column within the box, you can eliminate it from the rest of that row or column outside the box.
This is one of the most useful intermediate techniques because it's relatively easy to spot. Scan each box and ask: "Is this number confined to just one row or column within this box?"
4.Box/Line Reduction
Box/Line Reduction is the reverse of Pointing Pairs. If a candidate in a row or column is confined to a single box, then that number can be eliminated from the rest of that box.
💡 The key difference
Pointing Pairs: Start in a box, eliminate along a line.
Box/Line Reduction: Start along a line, eliminate within a box.
They're complementary — learn both and use them together.
5.X-Wing Pattern
The X-Wing is one of the most satisfying patterns in Sudoku. It occurs when a candidate appears in exactly two cells in two different rows, and those cells are in the same two columns. The candidate must occupy one cell from each row — forming an X pattern — so it can be eliminated from all other cells in those two columns.
📐 Visualizing it
Picture a rectangle. The four corners are the only places a number can go in two specific rows. Since the number goes in exactly two of those corners (diagonally opposite), it can't go anywhere else in those columns. Eliminate it from all non-corner cells in those columns.
X-Wings can also be formed with columns instead of rows — look for a candidate in exactly two cells in two columns, aligned in the same rows.
6.Swordfish Pattern
The Swordfish is an extension of the X-Wing that uses three rows and three columns instead of two. If a candidate appears in at most three positions in three rows, and all those positions fall within the same three columns, then the candidate can be eliminated from all other cells in those three columns.
Swordfish patterns are rare and hard to spot, but when you find one, it often breaks a puzzle wide open. Many solvers use pencil marks (notes) to identify these patterns visually.
7.Simple Coloring
Simple Coloring is a powerful technique for a single candidate number. Find all "conjugate pairs" for that number — units where the number can only go in exactly two cells. Then color those cells alternately (imagine blue and green). If the number is in one cell, it can't be in the other.
Build chains of conjugate pairs, alternating colors. If two cells of the same color see each other (share a row, column, or box), that color is false — eliminate the candidate from all cells of that color. If a cell that isn't in the chain can see both colors, the candidate can be eliminated from that cell.
8.Y-Wing (XY-Wing)
A Y-Wing involves three cells, each with exactly two candidates. One cell (the "pivot") can see the other two ("wings"). The pivot shares one candidate with each wing, and the wings share a candidate with each other. Any cell that can see both wings can have the shared wing candidate eliminated.
💡 Quick check
Pivot has candidates {A, B}. Wing 1 has {A, C}. Wing 2 has {B, C}. No matter what the pivot becomes, one of the wings will be C. So any cell that sees both wings cannot be C.
9.XYZ-Wing
An XYZ-Wing extends the Y-Wing. The pivot has three candidates {X, Y, Z} and sees two wings: one with {X, Z} and one with {Y, Z}. The shared candidate Z can be eliminated from any cell that sees all three cells (pivot and both wings).
This is harder to spot than a Y-Wing because the elimination region is more restricted — the target cell must see all three cells in the pattern. But it's a great technique for hard and expert puzzles.
10.Practice Drills: How to Internalize These Techniques
Knowing a technique and seeing it in a puzzle are two different things. Here's how to practice effectively:
- ▸Always use pencil marks — Write candidates in every empty cell. Patterns become visible when you can see the numbers. Use the Notes mode in Sudoku King.
- ▸Focus on one technique per session — Don't try to learn everything at once. Spend a week on Naked Pairs, then move to Hidden Pairs, then Pointing Pairs.
- ▸Start with medium difficulty — Easy puzzles rarely require these techniques. Medium and hard puzzles almost always do.
